Parkes was established in 1985 by Nick Parkes, a tax specialist and ex-HMRC District Inspector. The business and sectoral content side of the business was founded by Carola Parkes, whose first project was to research and produce Business Profiles on 100 industry sectors for CCH, the specialist tax and law publisher. CCH Business Profiles, a two-volume hard copy publication, was first published in 1987. Parkes provided cyclical updating services under contract to CCH.
Parkes subsequently moved to larger premises and expanded its content services team. Demand for specialist content services grew with the explosion of the internet as a new communications medium towards the end of the 1990s. Having developed the technical skills and expertise needed to deliver content for electronic media systems, Parkes was well placed to meet strong demand from government and industry during the 2000s.
